How did THAT Happen?

Unless you're trying out a new recipe, sound marketing strategy or building a new product, the words "How did that happen?" shouldn't show up too often. If they do, document what came before it, especially if it is a positive outcome.
For example: If you create a new great product and suddenly it performs way better or differently than you imagine and it is a win for your business. Be sure to take a moment, contain your excitement, pause and document. What happened prior to your discovery? Why does it work and can it be continually improved upon?
Now, if the same words "How did that happen!?" came more so as a negative surprise, again, pause and document. If something slipped through the cracks, whether a missed step in the process, an unprepared employee or a credit card left on auto pay, then assess and address the situation.
Always, document the good, the bad and the in between. This goes for business conversations, transactions, development, training, etc. It leaves more space in your mind for new ideas and conditioning. It minimizes stress and anxiety. Some of the most influential and successful individuals walk around with a journal or notebook. They take notes even during the simplest conversations to recall thoughts, ideas and general personal information. It makes a person more prepared, interesting and overall balanced.
Therefore, the next time you say "How did that happen?". It is a learning opportunity whether it is good or not-so-good. Embrace it.
