Dare to DO DIFFERENT

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. Doing what everyone is doing and expecting their successful results can also be considered insanity.
If McDonald's wasn't successful, Burger King wouldn't build next door to one every time another Mickey Ds shows up. However, if you're a big fan of either, you probably wouldn't care much of the geographical location as long as you get the food and service you expect from the place you enjoy.
Same as with your business. Just because your cousin, the person at the gala or the business down the street has a marketing strategy or even lack thereof, that works well, don't do what they do. Dare to do different!
Be you. Stand out by being you.
When I produce movies, I don't try to be Steven Spielberg, or George Lucas or even James Cameron. I don't make movies based on something that has been already done. Example: "I want to make a movie like Star Wars only with different names, locations and title." When I write and produce movies, I begin with "what if..." and go from there. I tell a story I'd like to explore and share with others. Rather than a rehashing or remixing of what others have done. It's more interesting. Same with how we film the movies. We want the picture and sound to support the story not an aesthetic we like that James Cameron may use or another big director, producer.
Your brand, voice and overall aesthetic will come with time. And then after you may be flattered by someone trying to copy you or build their business next door.
So, don't be too wrapped up in image and strategies. You do what's best for your business and customers. Just stay present, consistent and adapt where you need to adapt. The digital landscape continues to change often.
